Use of the common for activities
Advise SCC Countryside Bookings giving ideally one months notice. Details of the activity will be required and, if unusual, an individual event risk assessment. Usually there is no change for this notification, but in exceptional cases an office change may be levied. Contact SCC on countryside.bookings@surreycc.gov.uk
Please see the BIrchmere Campsite Use of Common risk assessment.
Wildlife walks
Birchmere Common is the largest surviving example of Surrey Heath in the county. It is home to a host of wildlife including deer, badgers and foxes, rabbits and birds. Rare species include the Dartford Warbler, Nightjars and a local variant of the grass snake which can be found in brilliant shades of green and blue!
The Common is operated by Surrey Wildlife Trust. There are some suggested routes and copies of these are available at the campsite. If you do decide to organise your own ramble on the common please stay on footpaths between April and October to avoid ground nesting birds nests in the heather.
